Oleg Marshev

The British music magazine “The Gramophone” hailed Oleg Marshev’s recording of Prokofiev’s music as “one of the most authoritative and impassioned performances on dis co far”. His interpretation of the “War” trilogy earned him the prestigious accolade of “Classic CD Choice”, surpassing renowned competitors such as Richter, Berman, and Ashkenazy.

Born in Baku, former USSR, Oleg Marshev received his training under Valentina Aristova at the Gnesin School for Highly Gifted Children and later with Mikhail Voskresensky at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1988, he completed his Performance Doctorate, graduating with Honors. Marshev is a direct descendant of the fifth generation of Russian pianists, following the lineage from Liszt through Alexander Siloti, Konstantin Igumnov, and Voskresensky’s teacher, Lev Oborin. Resident in Italy since 1991, Marshev has received awards in several international piano competitions in Canada, Italy, Portugal, Spain, USA, including four first prizes. These prestigious victories have solidified his reputation as one of the most talented Russian pianists of his generation.

In 1991 Marshev made his debut in New York with a highly praised recital at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. The following year, he performed at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, which led to further invitations to perform at this esteemed venue. Since then he has performed throughout the world from Canada to New Zealand, performing with orchestras such as the London Philharmonic and appearing at renowned venues and festivals like Wigmore Hall in London, Hall of the Conservatory “G.Verdi” in Milan, Sala Cecília Meireles in Rio de Janeiro, the “A.B. Michelangeli Festival” in Brescia-Bergamo, Italy, the Ruhr Klavier Festival in Germany, and the Festival at Roque d’Antheron in France.

Alongside his concert engagements, Oleg gives masterclasses in many different countries and is a Professor at the Anton Bruckner University in Linz, Austria.

Marshev’s initial recording endeavor consisted of the complete original works for solo piano by Prokofiev, spanning 5 CDs for Danacord Records. Subsequently, he has produced approximately 50 CDs for the same label, showcasing compositions by renowned composers such as Schubert, Brahms, Strauss, Rubinstein, Rachmaninov, and others. Noteworthy among his recordings is the world premiere recording of Emil von Sauer’s entire piano repertoire across 6 volumes. Marshev’s passion for lesser-known or overlooked music is evident in his recording of Danish romantic piano concertos on 4 CDs. Marshev is likely the first pianist to record the complete works for piano and orchestra by the great Russian Four – Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich. Additionally, he has completed two significant projects: the complete works for piano and orchestra by Chopin on 2 CDs and Mendelssohn on 4 CDs. Recently, in 2022-23, Marshev released new recordings, including a CD featuring Brahms sonatas and a three-CD set encompassing the complete works by Maurice Ravel.

All Marshev’ recordings have been received to widespread critical acclaim by leading international publications. His Shostakovich Concerti disc was reviewed thus by BBC Music magazine: “Marshev a phenomenon – master of every mood from strip-cartoon crispness to thundering monster, but above all a controlling sensibility of intelligence and feeling”.
